SuperVia and the state government closed a deal for works that will allow increasing the speed of trains: they decided to end the level crossings that cut the railroads in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. The works will include the exchange of nearly all walls and fences around the rails and the construction of five overpasses and 28 walkways.
The lack of access over the crossings causes in some stretches of the railroad the trains to be required to move with speed around 10 km/h in order to avoid tragedies.
Accidents
Works will also provide more safety for passengers, drivers and pedestrians. On October 3, there was an accident between a truck and a train at a level crossing in the city of São João de Meriti. On site, around five thousand people a day circulate.

Source of money
To make the changes, the government will invest about $98.34 million from the World Bank financing for the purchase of trains. As the compositions cost less than anticipated, the remainder will be used to improve the system.
