Santander announces $10 billion for infrastructure

President Dilma Rousseff received, on this Thursday, the global CEO of Santander Group, Emilio Botin, who announced $10 billion to fund the government’s infrastructure and logistics plan. According to Botin, the money has already been available to Brazilian and Spanish companies, as well as companies in other countries, with interest in working in the area of infrastructure in Brazil.

“I told the President that we attach importance to the infrastructure plan. We will collaborate not only with assistance to large companies from Brazil, Spain and other countries, but we will also financially contribute. I told her that, in a first step, we have about $10 billion”, he said.

Botin said that Santander will organize a symposium for Brazilian and Spanish companies interested in the infrastructure plan, which includes roads, railroads, ports and airports. According to him, Santander invested $27 billion in the country, in a show of confidence in the Brazilian economy, despite the pessimistic predictions regarding the growth of the country this year.

“This year Brazil is expected to grow at least 2%, which compared with other countries is a figure that is not ideal for the country, but it is still a positive growth though. Brazil has strength and capacity. We are certain that this growth – which for Brazil is small – will be higher in the future. And the proof is that we continue to invest in this country and stimulate foreign investors to do so as well – he said.

Botin said the president is doing a great job and taking a number of very good measures. For the CEO of Santander, Brazil has structure and capacity for development.

“We are very optimistic about the path of this country. We have great confidence in all that is being done,” he said.

“It was a pleasant, positive conversation. I would be worried if I was not in Brazil. That is, it is clear to us: this is a very important country. Among the major countries in which the bank is, Brazil, for us, is the most important.
