The Federal District council approves loan to Metrô’s stations and trains

The Federal District Legal Council approved this Tuesday afternoon (5) the law project which authorizes Brazilian Federal Bank to contract a loan of R$ 737.1 million with Caixa Econômica Federal (Brazil’s public bank) for the buying of ten new trains for Metrô. The text was sent in the beginning of April by Executive Power with urgency, but suffered rejections among the districts.

The text was approved in symbolic election in two turns with the presence of 17 deputies. None of the members of the parliament in the plenary assembly expressed opposition to the proposal. By the morning, the Finance and Budget Committee approved the substitute for the original Buriti text. Brazilian Federal Bank needs to submit the loan request to the bank.

The original text also authorized the contracting of the BNDES, but Brazilian Federal Bank says that the operation with Caixa offers “less demand from the financial counterpart”. The guarantee given by the government is that the collection of ICMS (value-added tax).
The purchase of next trains is part of the DF subways system expansion process. In March, the Metrô told G1 website that it would open a bidding intended for the conclusion of stations 104 South, 106 South and 110 South.

The stops started to be constructed along with the others, in 1991, but they were not open due to lack of demand. The inauguration of the three stations obeys a Plano Diretor de Transporte Urbano’s (Urban Transportation Directive Plan) guideline.

Interventions like concluding the finishing, equipment installation and the construction of the pedestrian walkway connecting the W and L axes are necessary for the conclusion of the construction work of the new stations. The construction should last two years and should be made with PAC (Growth Acceleration Program) resources, costing R$ 78.9 million.

A Metrô study points out that 8.4 thousand people should start using the trains every day, with the inauguration of the three stations. Currently the system counts on 140 thousand users and functions from Monday to Saturday, from 6am to 11:30pm, and on Sundays and holidays, from 7am to 7pm. The body also studies the possibility of expanding the operation during these other days.
