Between the end of this month and the beginning of March Vale will begin the installation of electronic tags on all FCA`s and EF Vitória a Minas` car fleet – 17,372 and 12,523 units, respectively, and locomotives. The tags will be passive (no battery), reprogrammable and are going to identify the cars in 72 reading points, 40 in Vitória a Minas and 32 in FCA. They will inform the characteristics of each vehicle (tare weight, number of axles, dimensions) and the data will be processed at the control center, allowing the fine adjustment in the management of the fleet. The integration of the information will be done by Alstom.
This is Vale’s second initiative. The Carajás RR fleet was all tagged between 2001 and 2003, with satisfactory results. The work is being complemented at this time with the application of the labels in the cars acquired in the last two years. Carajás had 7,984 cars last June.
The tags are the same, the only difference is in the position in which they are placed: in Carajás RR they stay under the cars to avoid vandalism and also to save a tag for each car (in the United States the AAR regulation is a tag in each side of the car). Also in Vitória a Minas RR there will be just one tag but applied on the car side and with the readers in both sides of the track, reading in any position. The risk of vandalism remains, but the control center will be able to know in which direction the car is turned, what allows to identify each axle and each wheel individually. That allows to combine the identification provided by the tags with the readings of hot box or irregularities in the wheels done by other systems.
The tags, the readers and the antennas are being imported from the US company Amtech.
