The 24 coaches of six trains for the Salvador metro system – a project that has already taken ten years and consumed R$ 1 billion in investments – shall start to be put on the tracks this morning. The expectation of Salvador City Hall is that the work of installation of the equipment on the tracks should take one week.
After the placing on the tracks, the trains shall then be subjected to a maintenance programme expected to last six months. Only then shall the trainset be tested in motion. According to the Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure of the municipality of Salvador, Euvaldo Jorge, the Salvador metro system shall be inaugurated in the first half of next year.
What is called the first stage of the Salvador metro system shall be a track length of six kilometers, connecting the Lapa Interconnection Station, the largest in the city, to the Rótula do Abacaxi, which is the intersection between the most important avenues of Salvador and the busiest motorway in Bahia, which is the BR-324, connecting the city to Feira de Santana. The bus station of the Bahia capital is also at this location.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva should be visiting Salvador next week to sign a loan of R$ 560 million granted to the state of Bahia by the Federal Government. These funds shall be used for the construction of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This system shall connect the Rótula do Abacaxi station mentioned above to Lauro de Freitas, in the metropolitan area, passing through the airport.
