Rio de Janeiro State Transportation Secretary promises improvements on the trains

A special series of Bom Dia Rio showed problems on the trains of SuperVia. On Thursday (2), the State Transportation Secretary Carlos Roberto Osório announced a strengthening of the fleet with the purchase of new trains with eight coaches and air conditioning from July, to the extension of Belford Roxo, Baixada Fluminense. According to him, this line is the most problematic in the network. He also promised direct operation from the Pavuna. During the semester, other improvements were announced by the secretary as a new timesheet for Vila Inhomirim and changes in extensions of Santa Cruz, Deodoro and Japeri.

Osorio said the system is crucial for transportation in the city and offers a number of challenges. With respect to schedules and constant delays, frequent complaints of users of transport, the Secretary said that are monitored by the regulatory agency Agetransp and accompanied by the secretariat. He recalled that SuperVia received a fine of almost R$ 150,000 because of system problems.

“We have problems, but the trains passengers know that the circulation has improved. It is not good yet. The extension of Belford Roxo, for example, will have seven new trains coming this month. This extension does not have any train with air conditioning”, said the secretary.

Osorio noted that of 18 stations of the Belford Roxo extension, four have problems because they can only comport trains of six coaches. So to serve the user, SuperVia will have a semidirect service with the busiest stations that hold the greatest trains, as Belford Roxo, Pavuna to Central do Brazil and other services with six-coach trains.

“We have determined that SuperVia lengthen platforms to accommodate trains with eight coaches”, Osorio said, noting that the entire Rio de Janeiro transport system is facing a crisis of passengers and the train is what has attracted more passengers because of improved quality of services.

New Schedules

The station Guapimirim, which has no connection between its platform and the street – so passengers have to go through the rails – will gain new trains. The Secretary also promised to take two trains from Macaé to this extension.

The secretary also announced the extension of Vila Inhomirim will gain two new schedules during morning rush from August and two new schedules at afternoon rush. “This extension almost became extinct. We will fight to recover that extension, which has no electrification, putting new machinery to reduce the intervals, starting in August”, said Osorio.

In April it was implanted, in Saracuruna extension, a transshipment point at Gramacho station to reduce the intervals between Gramacho and Central Brazil. He pointed out that between Gramacho and Saracuruna there is only one line and the ultimate solution is the doubling of the line. The secretary said he has World Bank resources to do this work and eliminate the need for transshipment.

“With the transshipment at Gramacho intervals were reduced by 10 minutes. This attracted more passengers. The movement in the extension increased from 85 000 passengers per day to 105,000 passengers per day. We got new passenger because we can reduce the intervals. Evidently the transshipment is a nuisance, but I talked with passengers who understand the duplication as the ultimate solution. The connection between Vila Inhomirim and Saracuruna needs more ticket sellers and the station was reformed so that users can make faster shifts “, explained the secretary.

Renovation

Osorio noted that the system was destroyed in the last 35, 40 years. But he said the state government bought 110 trains, of which 67 have already arrived. SuperVia also bought 20 trains and other 42 have been renovated. The purchase of new trains gradually allows the reduction of the intervals. Trains from the 50s and 60s break and reduce system reliability.

“There are 45 trains to arrive. The trains will arrive until early next year. This will give more stability to the system. But we already have some branches with reduced intervals and more reliable, but we have other extensions still very bad, which still operate with old machines and do not have any new train. The feeling of improvement will happen this year”, Osorio said, adding that the improved system has allowed an increase of 15% in passenger numbers.
