The man now appointed to the Secretariat for Metropolitan Transport of the State of São Paulo, Jurandir Fernandes, has said that the expectations of the State Government are those of completing the first phase of the Yellow Line (Line 4) of the São Paulo Subway in the first half of 2011. After having his name announced for the job, the future post holder has anticipated investments in the São Paulo Commuter Train Company (Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitanos – CPTM) which, in his opinion, will receive more than 400 train units between 2011 and 2012.
He also mentioned that the expansion of the Green Line (Line 2) of the São Paulo Subway already has its tender in place. According to Mr Fernandes, tomorrow will also be the date for the opening of the bids for the Gold Line (Line 17), which will connect Congonhas Airport and the Morumbi region through a monorail service.
When asked, the Secretary said that there was no doubt that the extension to the Lilac Line (Line 5) of the São Paulo Subway would not be ready in time for the 2014 World Cup. We are worried about the outcome of Line 5, he said. We really want to look into all possibilities to advance the solution as much as possible, either through a new tender, or the solution of the one which is already in place. After the denouncement that there had been fraud in the tender involving lots three to eight on Line 5, the contracts were put on hold until investigations, which were opened at the request of the São Paulo State Government, are completed.
The Prosecutor’s Office of the State of São Paulo has also advised the Presidency of the São Paulo Subway Company (Companhia do Metropolitano de São Paulo – Metrô) not to authorise the commencement of the execution of the contracts related to the tender for Line 5. The measure would be in place until the investigations of public administration itself end, or the civil inquiry opened by the Public and Social Assets Prosecutor’s Office, for the investigation of possible fraud in the process for this tender, has also terminated.
