Interest in the Bullet Train takes Koreans to Campinas

A delegation of ten executives from Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean company specialized in the production of carriages for high speed vehicles and also heavy machinery, this Wednesday (26th) visited possible areas for the establishment of a plant in Campinas. The company is participating in the Brazilian tender for the concession of the High Speed Train service (HST) between Campinas and Rio de Janeiro, passing through São Paulo.


According to the Executive Vice-President of the company, Gil-Young Chung, the project involves the creation of some 500 jobs involving specialised labour in areas such as engineering, technology and other local industries.


The City Hall has presented the investment guide and also possible areas for the installation of heavy industry, which corresponds to an area of 21 million square meters, or about 3% of the total area of the city. The executives have also visited the region around Viracopos Airport, which will have a Bullet Train station. This location, which is Pole 3 of the Campinas Technological Hub, with an area of 1.7 million square meters, will be expanded for the future installation of industrial companies in technological and service segments.


For the construction of the factory, Hyundai plans the construction of a plant with an area of 40 thousand square meters, within a total site area of 200 thousand square meters. The time frame for sending requests for clarification about the project ends at 6 p.m. on March 10th, 2011.


HST


The tender for the Brazilian bullet train will take place on April 29th. The estimated investment is around R$ 33.1 billion (€ 14.38 billion), with a maximum time frame of five years for construction and 40 years for the exploitation of the service. Companies from countries such as the People’s Republic of China, the United States, Japan, Korea and Spain have shown interest in participating in the bidding process for the construction of this vehicle.


At the beginning of the month, new President Dilma Rousseff had a word with ministers from South Korea and Japan, in São Paulo, about the High Speed Train project. In the first time frame, which was between July 14th and November 16th, 2010, more than 100 statements were registered at the National Land Transport Agency (Agência Nacional de Transporte Terrestre – ANTT) with different queries about the tender process and also about the Contract.


China


In April 2010, the Chinese Consul-General in São Paulo, Sun Rongmao, made a diplomatic visit to foster better commercial and cultural relations between Campinas and the Oriental country.


United States


The representative of the Foreign Investments and Commerce Office of the State of Colorado, Stephanie Garnica, visited Campinas, also in April, in order to seek opportunities for business deals between the city and Denver, the Capital of Colorado.


Japan


Representatives of the Japanese Government came to see the region in August and also informed their intention to participate in the choice of the concessionaire which will be proceeding with the work on the bullet train project. In March of this year, city mayor Hélio de Oliveira Santos should travel to get to know the Nipponic experience in the field of technology.


Korea


At the recommendation of the National Public Transport Association (Associação Nacional dos Transportes Públicos – ANTP), a team of 15 Koreans conducted an appraisal of the city’s infrastructure in April 2010.
