Vale opened on this Tuesday (May 15) a structure aimed at the qualification of employees who work in the maintenance of the Vitória to Minas Railroad (EFVM). Located in Governador Valadares, the Engineering Center will have capacity to serve approximately 4,000 employees. The expectation is that about 1,100 employees will be benefited by the new structure this year.
The option to install the Engineering Center in the city of Governador Valadares was due to the location of the municipality, located in a central point of the EFVM, a factor that will facilitate the logistics of travel both for employees and instructors.
“The structuring of the Engineering Center meets an old desire of employees, especially those who work in the maintenance of Permanent Way,” said the director of the Vitória to Minas Railroad, Carlos Quartieri. In addition to participating in qualification activities, the employees can also develop new techniques, skills and working methods on site.
The structure of the Engineering Center will feature railroad maintenance and operation simulators, among other facilities. “The first simulators to be available will be the tamping machine operation and the ballast regulator,” Quartieri explained.
These simulators can reproduce, through human-machine interface devices, the work of permanent way maintenance equipment in a virtual environment. Thus, even before going into the field, the employees can make different simulations of the activities that they will do along the railroad.

Also as part of the new structure, a specific area of the railroad yard of Governador Valadares will be used to carry out practical training of assembly and maintenance of Permanent Way equipment. Turnouts; tracks with different types of components, such as fixation of rails, ties and insulators, among others; devices for railroad signaling and automation, including switch machines, track relays and signals; and a small section with different ways of mounting electrical transmission line are some of these elements.
